No one wants to experience unpleasant smells in their home. When you are a homeowner with a septic system, certain smells can set off alarms. So what causes smells and odors in your home? And when should you worry about your septic system?

bathroom smells like sewage

Why does my bathroom smell like sewage?

There are multiple reasons why you may have odors in a home with a septic system. Usually it’s the plumbing in the house, explains Mike.

It could be your vents. The septic tank vent is typically located somewhere in the yard near the liquid tank. If you notice sewer smell coming from your septic tank vent, don’t assume that you have serious problems with your septic system. But if the smell backs up into the house, it could indicate a blocked vent.

It could be that you are not using all of your plumbing. If you’re not using all of your bathrooms regularly gasses may get trapped and then released.

What do I do if I smell a sewage or sulfur smell inside the house?

If you smell sewage in your house, call the septic guy first. That way, if there is any problem with the septic, it can be taken care of right away. Or if the problem is with the plumbing but the plumber can’t work without pumping, you can get the pumping out of the way to enable the plumbers to get started ASAP.

A septic guy can sometimes do most of it for you anyway, Mike confides, and at worst you get your septic pumped, and you know that‘s not the problem!

Why does my yard smell like sulfur?

Not every off-putting odor indicates an issue with your system. On rainy days, the smell may get trapped by the heavy atmosphere and hover at about human height. So if you notice your yard smells in the rain, wait and see if the issue resolves itself when the weather changes.
